With technology within reach could spell trouble for many local digital camera makers as the mobile phone equipped with camera starts offering one-mega pixel resolution. Taiwan digital-camera makers say they are worried that demand for their products will be replaced by demand for camera phones.
According to the latest report from Japan-based Techno Systems Research (TSR) forecasts that global demand for digital cameras in 2005 will grow 29.5% on year to 64 million units, while demand for camera phones will rise 139% to 132 million units. It means that many Japanese firms may not send their low-end digital camera order to Taiwanese makers because of the demand fast depleting.
Other local companies start their focus on the camera designed for mobile phone. To cope with the unfavorable situation, some Taiwan digital-camera producers have been developing pocket digital video camcorders (DVs). Like Premier Image Technology, the company expects strong growth in phone-camera module shipments in 2005 and set their target at 6.0 million units, up by 25 percent from their expected 2004 shipment at 4.5 million units.
Meanwhile, a data released by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) showed that digital camcorder unit sales have risen 12 percent year-over-year, totaling 2.6 million units through September compared to 2.3 million units for the comparable 2003 period. Total camcorder sales, which include standard analog and digital camcorders, have fallen by 8 percent to 3.6 million units, a trend CEA attributes to a transition period between the analog and digital alternatives. CEA noted that unit sales of DVRs have increased 304 percent year-over-year, surpassing one million units for the nine-month period through September 2004.
