Sales of mobile middleware grew by more than 27 percent in 2003 compared to the year before, indicating accelerating adoption of mobilized application, according to a report released Tuesday (Nov. 30) by IDC. More than $424 million in mobile middleware was sold in 2003, according to the study. The increase indicates that mobilization efforts have gained significant momentum among enterprises, the study said.
"It is no longer a question of if, but a question of when and how many workers will be mobilized over a period of time," Stephen D. Drake, IDC's program manager for mobile software, said in a statement. "In fact, many organizations have started to mandate mobilization."
He noted particularly significant growth in delivery of e-mail to mobile users. In fact, mobile e-mail has caught on so widely in enterprises that Drake predicted it will start to become popular among consumers.
