Fujitsu to implement Longrun2 power saving


Friday, December 3, 2004 Loss-making fabless processor company Transmeta Corp. has licensed its LongRun2 technologies for power management and transistor leakage current control to its foundry manufacturing partner, Fujitsu Ltd., Transmeta said Thursday (Dec. 2).

The terms of the licensing deal were not disclosed.

LongRun2 builds upon Transmeta's first-generation LongRun power management technology, which pioneered the dynamic adjustment of clcok frequency and voltage, hundreds of times per second, to reduce power consumption. LongRun2 technologies extend this approach by dynamically adjusting transistor threshold voltages to control transistor leakage.

"Fujitsu has achieved a performance leadership position with its 90-nanometer CMOS technology node, featuring an industry-leading transistor with a 40-nanometer gate length. In reaching for even smaller transistor geometries, Fujitsu saw that transistor leakage would become a critical issue to solve," said Matthew Perry, president and chief executive officer of Transmeta, in a statement.

Transmeta's Efficeon TM8800 processor recently began initial production implemented in a 90-nm CMOS manufacturing process at Fujitsu's Electronic Devices Business Group's Akiruno Technology Center in west Tokyo, albeit without using LongRun2. The initial 90-nm TM8800 shipments feature clock speeds of up to 1.6-GHz. The first versions of the TM8800 with LongRun2 are expected to sample later this year, featuring reductions in active and standby power.
