STMicroelectronics NV is set to invest $1.2 billion in Singapore and hire 1,000 technical and engineering staff over the next two years.
The majority of the money would be used to fully facilitize three wafer fabs, one producing chips on 200-mm diameter wafers and two on 150-mm wafers. and two new Asia-Pacific buildings that will house R&D, chip design, training and a regional headquarters, at Ang Mo Kio.
According to ST's chief executive officer, Singapore now accounts for 30 percent of the company's global manufacturing output.
"I want to see the output double over the next five years," said Pistorio.
The company already employs 7,500 people and has so far invested $2.9 billion.
