Prices for NAND- and NOR-based flash memory products continue to fall amid competitive pressures and slow demand in the marketplace.
"Following a period of allocation for some large NOR flash memory manufacturers, the fourth quarter has been a period of plentiful supply, driving prices lower," according to an e-mail newsletter from Smith & Associates Inc. (Houston), an independent distributor.
NOR-based parts in 16-, 64-, and 128-megabit densities "are still receiving regular inquiries, but with supply channels full, prices on these parts are likely to remain weak until Spring 2005," according to the newsletter.
Meanwhile, the NAND-based flash sector has seen competitive pricing, as Micron Technology Inc. has entered the fray. "1- to 4-GB NAND flash prices have decreased 10 percent or more across the board over the past month to six weeks," according to the distributor.
"8-GB NAND is short due to yield issues with microcontrollers associated with the end use of this product," it said. "Expect NAND prices to continue sliding through Q1 2005, as manufacturers compete for market share."
