Microsoft and Ask Jeeves both announced tools that allow users to search for files or emails in their desktop hard drives more effectively. That add to the already available search products offered by Google and Yahoo.
Microsoft's MSN Information Services division unveiled a preliminary or "beta" version of its MSN Toolbar Suite, a bundle of software programs that add search boxes to multiple spots on a person's computer, allowing them to search their Microsoft Outlook e-mail, calendar and Office documents.
Ask Jeeves' software is the byproduct of its acquisition this year of Tukaroo, a San Jose desktop search technology company. The application allows users to search for pictures, videos, PDFs, Microsoft Office documents, e-mail messages, bookmarks and other files.
