Samsung Electronics, the world's second-largest mobile phone maker, expects its handset sales to rise 16 per cent next year to more than 100m units.
The forecast comes as the mobile giant, which overtook Motorola in third-quarter sales, is suffering from falling profit margins amid increasing price competition in the fast-growing sector. Lee Ki-tae, Samsung president, forecast that this year's sales would exceed the group's target of 86m units.
The South Korean company plans to increase annual production capacity to 140m units by adding production lines in China and Korea even though it expects global handset sales growth to halve to less than 10 per cent in 2005.
Samsung currently has a 13.5 per cent global market share, compared to Nokia's 30.6 per cent, according to s researcher firm.
