Taiwan motherboard shipment to exceed 100 Million

Wednesday, January 5, 2005

The top-four Taiwan motherboard makers – Asustek Computer, Elitegroup Computer Systems (ECS), Gigabyte Technology and Micro-Star International (MSI) – are expected to ship a total of over 100 million motherboards in 2005, compared to about 85 million estimated for this year, according to sources at the four makers.

Although Asustek has not officially announced its 2005 motherboard shipment goal, sources at the company said that the company will tentatively set the target at 50 million units, up 25% from this year’s projection of 40 million.

ECS also aims to boost its motherboard shipments by 25% on-year to 20 million units in 2005, company sources said.

In an effort to sustain its shipment goal, ECS announced Wednesday that it will invest an additional US$20 million in Shining Bright, one of its subsidiaries located in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province (China), enabling it to ramp up its production of PCBs and other products.

Shining Bright, a wholly owned subsidiary of ECS, will have a total capitalization of US$63.44 million following the latest capital injection from ECS.

Gigabyte and MSI each project their motherboard shipments will grow about 10% on-year, in 2005.
