A U.S. federal judge has ruled that Rambus Inc.'s patent-infringement suit against South Korea's Hynix Semiconductor Inc. can proceed, according to reports.
Hynix had asked U.S. District Judge Ronald M. Whyte in San Jose to dismiss the case, claiming that its chips don't infringe Rambus' patents..
Rambus s embroiled in a series of suits with several DRAM makers. Rambus has also sued Infineon Technologies AG, Micron Technology Inc. and Siemens AG.
In 2000, Hynix filed suit against Rambus in 2000, asking the court to rule that it did not infringe any valid Rambus patents. Rambus responded by suing Hynix for patent infringement.
Rambus claims memory-chip makers used their patents but didn't pay royalties on the technology. Meanwhile, the memory makers contend Rambus didn't make it known during standard-setting meetings that it held patents on the technology being discussed.
