Samsung Electronics has increased the size of its financial contribution to the Indian Ocean tsunami relief effort to US$3 million.
In the immediate aftermath of the earthquake and tidal wave that hit South Asia Samsung pledged US$1 million for the relief effort. The company has now increased that contribution and Kun-Hee Lee, the company's chairman, has called for greater humanitarian aid and assistance for a rapid recovery.
In addition to the financial assistance, more than 10,000 Samsung employees located in the affected areas have already volunteered to take part in relief efforts, the company said. The company has also formed an emergency rescue corps consisting of local employees in South Asia and medical personnel from Korea, who began on-site operations.
Employees at Samsung's local subsidiaries in the affected region have collected money and material goods to support the five most devastated countries — Thailand, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. Staff of local subsidiaries have helped with rescue work.
A group of ten doctors, pharmacists and nurses from the Samsung Seoul Medical Center left Korea on Wednesday (Jan. 4) to provide medical relief to disaster victims and help prevent the spread of disease, the company said.
Samsung has expanded its support after Kun-Hee Lee heard reports from the scene that indicated the extent of the devastation was much greater than first understoo
