The U.S. is actively considering a move to substantially increase the number of H-1B visas issued to Indian professional workers, according to the U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission Robert O. Blake.
"The decision [to consider increasing the number of visas] is based on the fact that the U.S. recognizes India's contribution in the fields of software, engineering, science, architecture, accounts and law," a Press Trust of India report from New Delhi quoted Blake as saying.
This year's full quota of 65,000 H-1B visas was exhausted on the first day they were made available, Oct. 1. However, the U.S. is believed to have recently allotted an additional 20,000 H-1B visas for Indians who had completed their master's degrees from an American university.
