Citing losses in the flash-memory market, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. on Monday (Jan. 10) said that its fourth-quarter operating income will be "down significantly" from the $68.4 million reported in the third quarter.
AMD (Sunnyvale, Calif.) said sales for the fourth quarter ended December 26, are expected to be up slightly from the $1.239 billion reported in the third quarter.
AMD's processor business is profitable. The unit "continued its upward trajectory and fourth quarter sales are expected to increase compared to the prior quarter," according to AMD. "In a competitive and challenging NOR flash memory market, the Memory Group is anticipated to have lower fourth quarter sales and an operating loss." The company's prior guidance for the fourth quarter anticipated overall sales to increase, driven by processor sales that exceeded seasonal trends, and flash memory sales that were flat to up.
In contrast, an investment banking firm last week raised its outlook for Intel Corp. in the fourth quarter due to strong demand for desktop and notebook PCs. Michael McConnell, an analyst with Pacific Crest Securities Inc. (Portland), also projects better-than-expected figures for the microprocessor giant in the first quarter of 2005.
