11% global PC market increase tided to Asia-Pacific

Tuesday, January 11, 2005 An uptick in enterprise demand and strong growth in the Asia-Pacific region will drive an 11 percent increase in global PC shipments in 2005, according to market research firm Piper Jaffray. The firm aid that with PC, server, and storage spending continuing to be bright spots in the IT landscape, overall PC shipments would grow from 176.1 million in 2004 to 196.2 million in 2005, with revenue rising 5 percent year over year. He expects the low double-digit PC unit growth to be aided by U.S. enterprise spending on notebooks, and double-digit unit growth of x86-based servers.

Piper Jaffray's near-term growth estimates are similar to those of market research firm Gartner Dataquest, which projected an average 11.3 percent unit sales growth through 2005 as companies replace older equipment.

The Asia-Pacific region is expected to be major driver of PC growth, led by China and India, said Piper Jaffray. Asia-Pacific PC shipments, expect for Japan, are forecast to grow 23 percent from 33.2 million to 41 million units. PC shipments in Japan will rise from 13.6 million to 14.3 million, a modest 5 percent increase, the firm said.

Elsewhere, Western Europe PC shipments are slated to grow 6 percent from 41.6 million to 44.3 million, while shipments in Latin America, Canada, the Middle East and Central and Eastern Europe are forecast to rise 16 percent from 29.3 million to 34.1 million units, driven largely by price reductions according to the firm.
