26,000 AMD processors to enable China's e-Educations

Tuesday, January 11, 2005

In Beijing, China, AMD has teamed with Lenovo and Dawning to provide the country’s Hebei Long-Distance Education Project with more than 26,000 AMD processor-based PCs and servers.

This project is part of China’s “informatilization” initiative, meant to encourage more effective communication across the country. Hebei Province was chosen to be the demo site for the launch of the long-distance education program, which began last October.

As a pilot province for the initiative, Hebei is implementing e-education programs in pilot municipalities including Zhangjiakou, Chengde and Baoding to improve quality and efficiency of education in the countryside, and bridge the gap between eastern and western China by enhancing social and economic development in rural areas.

Karen Guo, corporate VP at AMD and president of AMD Greater China said in a statement, “AMD will help hundreds of thousands of students improve their education by using our products to enhance their learning experience.”

Hundreds of networked computer classrooms are to be built equipped with AMD Opteron processor-based server from Dawning and Lenovo desktop PCs, resulting in at least 200,000 students gaining PC access.

“The remote education project is a very important project for both the Hebei province and the whole country, as the Central Government chooses Hebei to be the demo site for nationwide remote education,” said Yan Chunlai, assistant supervisor of Hebei Education Bureau, in a statement.

In other AMD news, the company also detailed today a new program to alert consumers of a new security feature of AMD boxed processors.

A newly designed AMD holographic label is being used to assure consumers of genuine products and help protect consumer rights upon purchase.

All authentically boxed AMD Athlon 64 FX, AMD Athlon 64, AMD Sempron and AMD Opteron products have the holographic label on the bottom left corner of the packaging. The label combines overt authentication feature, tamper evident construction and a tightly controlled secure supply chain, making it extremely difficult to duplicate, consisting of a 3-D, full-parallax view surrounding the AMD logo that shows dots arranged in a pattern.
