Worldwide shipments of personal computers grew 13.7 percent in the fourth quarter, IDC reported Tuesday.
Using slightly different measurement methods, Gartner Inc. put quarterly growth at a more modest 10.9 percent in its report.
IDC said it was the seventh consecutive quarter of double-digit growth in PC shipments. The company said the fourth-quarter gain brought full-year growth to 14.7 percent, slightly above the firm's forecast of 14.5 percent growth when compared with 2003.
Dell posted a 21.1 percent growth in the forth quarter while No. 2 Hewlett-Packard reported a 9 percent growth, IDC said.
Total PC shipments during the October-December period grew to 51.5 million compared with 45.3 million in same period a year earlier, IDC said. Gartner reported shipments of 53.9 million, up from 48.6 million in 2003.
