Not a good day for AMD

Wednesday, January 19, 2005

AMD Inc. reported a net loss of $30 million, or 8 cents per share, on sales of $1.26 billion in its fourth quarter ended December, as the semiconductor supplier saw aggressive pricing erode sales of its memory products.

Fourth-quarter results also included charges of $49 million, or 13 cents per share, associated with the conversion and retirement of $200 million of debt.

AMD reported net income of $43 million, or 12 cents per share on sales of $1.21 billion a year ago and net income of $44 million, or 12 cents per share on sales of $1.24 billion the previous quarter.

The company warned investors and analysts earlier this month its fourth-quarter income would fall significantly from the third quarter levels due to losses in the flash memory market.

On the positive side, AMD reported a 9 percent increase in its Computation Products Group sales, due to higher server and mobile unit and dollar sales.

For 2004, AMD reported net income of $91 million, or 25 cents per share on sales of $5 billion, compared with a net loss of $274 million, or 79 cents per share, on sales of $3.52 billion in 2003, including charges.

For the first quarter of 2005, AMD expects processor sales to be flat to down slightly sequentially, with flash memory sales remaining weak because of continuing price pressure.
