Nokia setup 3G center in Taiwan

Tuesday, February 1, 2005
Nokia has set up a third-generation (3G) telecom technology development and test center in Taiwan, making it Nokia's 18th such center in the world, according to Wang Jian Ya, telecom business manager of Nokia Taiwan.

Wang said that this year the global telecom business is poised to enjoy a robust growth following two to three years of sluggish performance, due mainly to the rapid development of 3G mobile phones and the telecom content sector. Wang continued that Nokia Taiwan has helped Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest telecom carrier, complete 3G telecom infrastructure at a cost of about NT$7 billion, 20% to 30% lower than that of Chunghwa Telecom’s 2G infrastructure.

In Taiwan’s market will see the start of third generation infrastructure to kick off this year with estimate of1~2 million subscribers expected to sign up for this kind of service. Also, Nokia is gearing up to launch its 3G mobile phone soon, perhaps mid-February at less than NT$10,000 each unit. Meanwhile, Nokia has kept a low profile in its procurement from Taiwan, but local sources said that Nokia is scheduled to outsource NT$30 ~ 40 billion worth of handset parts, wireless local area network (WLAN) equipment and asymmetric digital subscriber line (ADSL) equipment from Taiwan in 2005.
