To provide an in-depth development platform and product support to Korean manufacturers of cellular handsets and handheld electronic devices, ON Semiconductor said yesterday it plans to open a Solutions Engineering Center in Seoul, Korea during Q2.
"Support for our key customers in these highly competitive markets is best achieved by placing our proven expertise in advanced power management as close to the engineering base of these customers as possible," explained Peter Green, ON’s senior VP of the integrated power group, in a statement.
"The SEC in Seoul will be staffed with all of the resources necessary to enable our Korean-based customers to tap in -- at a local level -- to the vast experience ON Semiconductor has developed in power management,” he continued.
"Development of advanced power solutions that solve our customers' problems as they provide more advanced platforms to their customers, is critical to our joint success. With the establishment of the SEC in Seoul, ON Semiconductor is literally committing resources to our customers' future and the success of their product lines. This will be a win for both within a very fast growing and aggressive market space,” Green added.
The SEC is to be headed by S.B. Lee, who joined ON in December with 30 years of experience in power solutions and was most recently the Korea country manager for Maxim Integrated Products Inc.
The company said it would open other SECs in the Asia Pacific region, to address the growing market for its product. In Q3 2004, the region contributed 52 percent to ON’s global revenues.
ON also said yesterday it has teamed with home appliance manufacturer Haier Group on a joint power laboratory at Haier's R&D center at Qingdao in Shandong Province, northern China.
The new lab is to be Haier's first devoted specifically to power application solutions. Joint development efforts at the lab will focus on efficient power solutions for Haier's next-generation products -- including air-conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines and LCD television sets, the companies said.
"Innovation and product quality are the hallmarks of success for both Haier and ON Semiconductor, and this new collaborative lab will synergize our resources and our commitment to jointly develop energy-efficient power supply applications," said Yu Zida, Haier group VP and director of R&D promotion division & information products division, in a statement.
As home appliances become increasingly sophisticated, offering more new features, there is a matching increase in power consumption. ON’s switching power supply solutions are expected to allow Haier to optimize power efficiency and minimize standby power consumption in their power supplies, and provide a single, standardized ac mains input voltage platform that can be sold into any market worldwide.
"As China and the world embrace energy conservation policies, consumers will pay more attention not only to product-centric functions, but also to power management and energy-saving features," said Bill Bradford, ON’s senior VP of sales & marketing, in a statement.
"Our power solutions satisfy or exceed increasingly stringent international regulatory standards, and our partnership with the China Certification Center for Energy Conservation Products (CECP) helps drive energy conservation and efficiency in China,” he added.
ON said it would also assign resident field application engineers to work at the joint lab with Haier's R&D teams across different product lines to tailor power solutions.
