Intel cutting back on polymer memory research

Tuesday, February 8, 2005 Intel , is cutting back on polymer memory research after concluding that a polymer memory material studied with Opticom ASA (Olso, Norway), is not suitable for inclusion in Intel products, Opticom said..

The disclosure came after Thin Film Electronics AB, Opticom's Swedish operating subsidiary, was advised that Intel's development activities related to polymer memory were being significantly scaled back in the first quarter of 2005. The material's unsuitability was cited as the reason. Opticom said a licensing agreement with Intel remains in force but that Opticom does not expect to receive any royalty payments.

Opticom, a research organization, has worked with Intel for several years on a multilayer, nonvolatile plastic memory technology. It restructured its operating subsidiary group, Thin Film Electronics (TFE) in June 2004. The move followed news that TFE was preparing to stop work with Intel due to technical problems and a failure to renegotiate contracts with the U.S. chip giant.
