The Indian government has delicensed the 2.4 GHz band to be used for both indoor and outdoor wireless (Wi-Fi) access while the 5.1 GHz band can now be used for indoor and adjacent campuses.
The government has not, however, met the demand to free the 5.1 GHz band for outdoor use.
The move comes three months after the Indian government delicensed the 2.40 to 2.48 GHz band low power outdoor use and the 5.15 to 5.35 GHz band for indoor use of low-power Wi-Fi systems.
An Indian government statement said the new steps were meant to encourage and speed up Internet penetration, the usage of hotspots for mobile internet users, and broadband services in the country, including electronic governance.
The new measures will help Internet service providers adopt Wi-Fi technology and speed Internet penetration, whereas until now they could only use dial-up access.
