In order to strengthen its pledge to fight against copyrights violators, Taiwan Ministry of Economics Affairs (MOEA) has listed top priority for this year is to continue crackdown on pirated video after the Protection of Film and Video works (FVWP) along with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) announced a series of anti-piracy enforcement operations, which will be targeting video rental shops around Taiwan that illegally rent or sell pirated movies.
Last month alone, the police authority contact numerous raids and seized more than 68,000 pirated CD-Rs and DVD-Rs, mostly from private individuals that use optical disc burners. So far, 12 individuals involved with unauthorized manufacturing activities have been arrested. Frank Rittman, Vice President, Asia-Pacific for the MPA commended the police authorities actions and said: "The enforcement operations begun last month support the government's stance against illegal video piracy and are aimed at supporting the rental and sale of legitimate copies, protecting the interest of MPA member companies and the entire film industry in Taiwan."
The government initiative undertaken by the Government Information Office (GIO) and the Intellectual Property Office is trying to ensure that shops in Taiwan are not engaging in piracy activities, which will expand its enforcement operations to other cities to Taichung, and Kaohsiung by later this year. As part of its public education efforts, MPA began rolling out its anti-piracy theatrical trailer across the region as part of a 40 county anti piracy awareness campaign.
