AMD officially opened its new microprocessor test, mark and pack (TMP) facility in Suzhou Industrial Park, China. The new facility, which began rolling out products last December, occupies 11,000 square meters and is located adjacent to Spansion (China) Ltd's existing Flash memory assembly and TMP building.
AMD has committed to investing a total of US$33.4 million in the TMP facilitythrough 2009 and has received approval from the Chinese governmentfor a total investment ofup to US$100 million. AMD also plans to hire approximately 300 new employees to staff the facility during the next few years.
The new TMP facility is currently testing, marking and packing seventh-generation products, including AMD Sempron processors. The company plans to begin moving its eighth-generation microprocessors through the facility in the second half of 2005.
"Suzhou holds a unique position as one of the key IT manufacturing centers in China and is a key focal point for our global operations," said Hector Ruiz, AMD chairman, president and CEO. "With software and silicon driving the modern economy, information technology is providing the foundation for China's ability to remain one of the world's brightest lights."
It is believed that the new TMP facility will further empower AMD's growth momentum in China and enhance the company's worldwide growth strategy. Its construction demonstrates AMD's commitment to China and continues a strategic focus that started in 1996 when the company began construction of the adjacent Flash memory assembly and TMP plant. The Flash memory facility was completed in 1998.
AMD gained momentum in 2004 when it strengthened its relationships with some of China's leading information technology (IT) companies, established AMD China Co, Ltd, and announced plans to establish a Greater China headquarters in Beijing.
