Global mobile phones sales to rise

Tuesday, March 8, 2005 Global sales of mobile phone handsets surged 30 percent in 2004 to a record led by growth in South America, with more strong sales expected for 2005 amid fierce price competition, a survey by Gartner showed.

Gartner said a record 674 million handsets were sold around the world in 2004, a 30 percent year-on-year rise. South America saw sales shooting up 89.4 percent to 73 million handsets.

Gartner estimated that total handset sales this year would increase to about 730 million units, with strong competition in emerging markets for cellphones priced at 50 dollars and less.

Nokia of Finland remained the industry leader, with sales in 2004 of 207.2 million handsets, giving it a market share of 30.7 percent. Motorola of the United States was placed second at 15.4 percent share, with sales of 104.1 million.

Number three was Samsung at 12.6 percent market share, followed by Germany's Siemens at 7.2 percent, South Korea's LG at 6.3 percent and Sony Ericsson at 6.2 percent.
