Matrix partners with Symbian on 3D memory

Monday, March 14, 2005 Matrix Semiconductor Inc., a developer of three-dimensional semiconductor memory, has joined a partner program belonging to Symbian plc, a vendor of operating systems for mobile phones.

The 3DM multi-layer, antifuse-based ROM offers a removable memory publishing platform for mobile network operators, application developers and content providers, according to Matrix. The memory is offered in conventional IC packages and the MultiMediaCard (MMC) format, with additional memory card formats to follow, Matrix (Santa Clara, Calif.) said.

By becoming a Symbian Platinum Partner, Matrix would benefit from a range of commercial services, including technical support and joint marketing opportunities as well as privileged access to Symbian OS source code and a dedicated partner support team. More than 14 million phones based on the Symbian operating system were shipped worldwide in 2004 according to Matrix. The target markets for Matrix 3DM include handheld computers, mobile phones, portable audio and video players, advanced toys, and game consoles.

Matrix heavily backed with venture capital investment, was included in the first and the second iteration of the Silicon Strategies' 60 Emerging Startups list.
