AMD announced new strategy on embedded market

Wednesday, March 16, 2005 AMD has announced a shift in strategy to support the embedded market with mainstream processors. The new program will feature five-year life cycles plus two years of end-of-life support. The first processors offered will be the recently announced Opteron 852, 252, and 152. This offering will provide embedded customers with eight-way-, two-way-, and uni-processor configurations that use the latest Opteron products and incorporate the extended life cycle the customers have been seeking.

This change in strategy is a critical step in meeting the changing demands of the market as new technologies like VoIP and new computing form factors like blade servers change the competitive landscape of the market. Intel paved the way for the x86 architecture in the embedded market; now AMD will offer another high-performance solution built on the AMD64 architecture. AMD, however, still faces the challenges of supporting production for longer life cycles and building with its partners an infrastructure to support the demands of the embedded market. If successful, AMD could further enhance its position in the overall computing market.
