Infineon Technologies and Rambus have sealed a broad patent licensing agreement that brings to a halt the long running litigation between the two companies related to SDRAM and DDR DRAM technologies.
The deal gives Infineon access to Rambus intellectual property for use in current and future memory products sold worldwide. Infineon will pay a quarterly license fee of $5.85 million for two years starting Nov. 15, 2005. After then, and only if Rambus enters into additional specified licensing agreements with certain other DRAM manufacturers, Infineon will make additional quarterly payments "which may accumulate up to a maximum of an additional $100 million."
Rambus has also sued Hynix Semiconductor Inc. and Micron Technologies for similar patent infringement. The settlement comes just three weeks after a federal judge in Richmond, Va. dismissed the patent infringement claims by Rambus against Infineon.
As part of the agreement, Infineon also has gained the option to acquire other related and specific licenses that together would mean the Munich, Germany based DRAM maker becomes a "most-favored customer" of Rambus.
Infineon has simultaneously granted Rambus a fully-paid perpetual license for memory interfaces.
The companies have agreed to the immediate dismissal of all pending litigation and have released each other from all existing legal claims
