Taiwan manufacturers to eye auto-electronics market

Tuesday, March 29, 2005
After Hon Hai, Asustek, Quanta, and UMC, now it's companies specialized in IC design such as Holtek Semiconductor Inc., ELAN Microeletronics Corp., and Princeton Technology Corp. going into car components market in hope of grabbing a piece of this lucrative business. Those companies are moving progressively to the car components market for their ability to produce in low costs without compromising on quality, and for the profits that this market could bring them.

Intel, the world¡¯s leader in designing IC, showcased its and world's first car processor in the body of a customized Mini Cooper during the CeBIT show. The debut confirms all the IC companies in the world that PC is going to be influential in the car business. Nevertheless, experts warn that the market of car electronic components is not as simple as it seems if companies want to be part of it because car electronics is involved in combinations of technologies such as electronics, optoelectronics, and communications. To break down even more, related products include sensors, micro-controllers, micro-processors, power supplies and monitors.

But above all, it's the concern of safety. For that concern, experts suggest that Taiwanese IC design companies should start from car peripheral products, instead of focusing on engines. EMC's executive says, to be adopted by motor companies, any key components are required to be tested and certified for many times. Therefore, for a new comer to the market, it usually takes at least five years to be awarded a certification. Regardless of all, the emerging car electronics business already offer an alternative for all the PC makers and IC companies especially when the PC business is believed to be reaching its peak and will soon start to decline.
