Rambus has signed a patent license agreement with NEC Electronics that allows the development and manufacture of memory controllers based on Rambus' IP.
The five-year agreement, subject to renewal or extension, covers memory controllers compatible with SDR, DDR and DDR2 SDRAM as well as future memory controller innovations. Rambus will receive royalties on sales of licensed products.
Though Rambus (Los Altos, Calif.) has tangled with many semiconductor suppliers over alleged IP violations, the company has had a relatively harmonious relationship with NEC.
In February, NEC agreed to license Rambus' serial link technology.
