Acer gains ground on PC and Notebook shipment

Acer said the company expects to ship a record 10 million PCs and 7 million notebook PCs this year after the company achieved its forecast. The shipment forecast represents an increase of more than 50% over the 6.46 million PCs the company shipped in 2004, based on IDC estimates.
 
Acer, ranking among the world's top five branded PC vendors, enjoyed record growth in operating income in the first quarter of 2005 with NT$1.94 billion, representing a 117% on-year rise and 27.5% on-quarter increase. Net profits were at NT$2.15 billion for the first quarter, up 54.6% from NT$1.39 billion a year earlier.
 
According to market-research organization International Data Corp. (IDC), Acer overtook HP and Dell as the No. 1 NB supplier in Europe last quarter, at which time its shipments in this region increased 43.7% from the same period of last year. In the region, Acer was recognized as the No. 3 supplier of personal computers last quarter and saw the shipments in the region rise 39.2% from the same period of last year, compared with the industry¡¯s average 16.9% growth in the region.
 
In Italy and Czech, Acer was the No. 1 PC brand last quarter. It was the second-largest PC brand in Austria, Spain, Portugal, Poland and Slovak and the No. 3 PC brand in Germany and the United Kingdom. In eastern Europe, Acer emerged as the No. 1 NB brand for the first time in Poland, Russia, Hungary and Czech last quarter, with its year-on-year growth rates posting at 409%, 284%, 127% and 152%, respectively.
