IBM staff in China leaving Lenovo

Monday, May 16, 2005

Lenovo has recently faced challenge in a surge of employee leaving from the former IBM unit in China, according to sources at IT companies. Since the acquisition announcement last December, the firm has lost 40-50 members or about one third of the IBM team, the source said.

In addition to losing IBM employees, Lenovo is losing some market share, as IBM¡¦s notebook shipments in Asia Pacific, excluding Japan, have been decreasing for the past two quarters, according to data from International Data Corporation (IDC).

In the second quarter of 2004, IBM was the top notebook vendor in the region with 18% of the market. Since then the company¡¦s market share has fallen to 13%, and in the first quarter of this year, HP overtook IBM to claim the top spot in the region with a 15% share, according to IDC.
