Intel 915 platform PCs drop below US$500

Wednesday, May 18, 2005

Prices for PC components supporting Intel’s 915 platform and LGA775 Pentium 4 CPUs, including motherboards, PCI Express (PCIe) graphics cards and DDR2 memory modules, have fallen by up to 30% in the Asia Pacific region since the fourth quarter of 2004, according to reports coming from retail channels.

Overall, quotes for 915-based PCs have fallen to below US$500 in the region, down 20% from the fourth quarter of last year, the reports indicated.

DDR2 256MB modules are currently priced at around US$55, down 30% from the fourth quarter of last year, the channels reported. The retail price of entry-level PCIe graphics cards also fell 30% to US$80. In addition, prices of 915-based motherboards and related components have dropped 5-15% respectively, according to the reports.

Despite seasonal effects, the proportion of 915-based motherboards is increasing globally this quarter, with the proportion of Intel 915 chipset-based motherboards approaching half of total motherboard shipments in Europe, Japan and the US, motherboard makers stated. However, in developing markets such as China, shipments of motherboards based on 865 chipsets are still much stronger, the makers added.
