Kingston: NAND flash to account for 50% of sales by 2010

Wednesday, May 25, 2005

Although Kingston Technology focuses on the business sector rather than the hot MP3 player market, the company still projects that its NAND flash sales will double this year, and grow to 50% of its sales by 2010, according to the company.

Kingston reported that NAND flash accounted for 18% of its overall sales in 2004 and the company projects the contribution from NAND flash to increase to 30% of its sales this year, according to Scott Chen, company vice president of APAC business unit. In addition, over the next three to five years, the memory module maker foresees revenues to be split evenly between NAND flash and DRAM sales, Chen stated.

Memory card and flash disk drive are currently the two chief applications for the company’s NAND flash business and account for 60% and 40% of its flash sales, Chen indicated. With Kingston focusing on the business sector, Chen noted that the company currently has no plans to enter the MP3 player market.

Although Kingston started production at its new Shanghai assembling plant in March, the company stated that the plant will initially focus on DRAM module production. The plant, which is situated in the Shanghai Waigaoqiao Free Trade Zone, is expected to reach a monthly capacity of 3.8-4.4 million DRAM modules by the middle of this year, company president of the Greater China region, BL Wang stated.
