PowerChip to increase memory production

Tuesday, May 31, 2005
PowerChip Semiconductor Corp. (PSC) has recently team-up with Elpida Memory as the to make venture into contract-price market for double data rate II (DDRII) memory chips in third quarter.

PSC Chairman Frank Huang points out that whether DDRII contract-price market will take off or not will depend on whether Intel's chipsets support the memory specification or not. He expects good timing for entering this market to come next quarter, when supplies of Intel's DDRII-compatible chipsets are estimated to soar. In the cooperation with Elpida, PSC will initially pinpoint non-Japan Asia as its major market while Elpida will lure business in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Huang notes that his company's advantage in DDRII production is its second 300-mm silicon-wafer factory, which will come on line soon and DDRII will account for 30% to 40% of the factory's total output next month.

Also, PSC plans to allocate more than 10% of its capacity at its first 12-inch wafer fab by this June to produce AG-AND NAND flash for Renesas Technology. Renesas, the downstream makers said PSC will allot a monthly capacity of 5,000 wafers in June for Renesas, up from 3,000 this month. PSC may start producing 4Gb NAND flash by the end of the year for Renesas and may also supply Renesas with its lower-density products such as 2Gb NAND flash chips. PSC's two 300-mm fabs to have combined output of 70,000 wafers a month by the end of this month.
