SIS benefit from Intel chipset shortages

Tuesday, June 7, 2005

Taiwan-based chipset makers Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and VIA Technologies reported different financial results for May, with an Intel chipset shortage helping SiS enjoy on-year growth of 25.7% last month, while VIA reported an on-year slide of 22.5%, sources in the Taiwan motherboard industry commented.

Despite seasonal effects, SiS recorded revenues of NT$881 million last month, down only 1.3% sequentially. VIA posted revenues of NT$1.067 billion in May, down 19.2% on month.

SiS also outpaced rival VIA in chipset shipments for the Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) K8 platform in May, buoyed by strong demand for its SiS756 and SiS760GX chipsets in both the channel and OEM segments, according to the company.

VIA denied to comment on the news.

SiS is also already mass producing its dual-core chipsets, the SiS656FX/966 for the Intel Pentium 4 and SiS756/965 for AMD K8, the company stated.
