Intel may locate test facility in India

Thursday, June 9, 2005 Intel Corp. may locate an advanced test manufacturing facility in India at an investment of about $400 million, according to a news agency report.

Indian Minister for Information Technology Dayanidhi Maran was quoted by the Press Trust of India as saying: "They [Intel] have more or less decided to come to India. They need some more time to complete formalities, which, I am sure, they will."

The minister is currently visiting the U.S. to lobby computer and telecoms firms to set up manufacturing facilities in India. The report about Intel's possible choice of India for the facility came after Maran met with Intel chairman Craig Barrett..

Chennai, Noida and Bangalore are candidates to host the facility, but China and Vietnam are also said to be contenders. Maran has been engaged in talks with Intel for several months trying to convince the chip maker to establish an Indian facility.

Intel currently has a large research and development center here
