Intel will add a new integrated 945 chipset, the 945GZ, to bring support for the company’s Pentium D dual-core processors to the mainstream market, with volume production slated for the first quarter of 2006, according to sources.
Differing from the Intel 945P/G chipsets, the 945GZ will not offer a PCI Express (PCIe) x16 graphics port, will only support 800/533 MHz FSB speeds and provide a single-channel DDR2 memory controller, said the sources.
For this year, Intel is targeting the high-end market with its Pentium D desktop CPUs, and the company plans for its dual-core platform to enter the mainstream segment starting from the second-half of next year, the sources added.
In related news, although Intel has been pushing migration from the 865 chipset platform to its 910GL and 915 series chipsets, the mainstream market continues to see strong demand for 865 chipsets, according to motherboard makers. With supply of Intel 865 series currently tight, chipsets produced by Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and VIA Technologies are benefiting, said the makers.
