Market turns to fanless x86 processors

Monday, June 20, 2005
VIA Technologies recently announced the released of 2GHz C7-M embedded processor, which is manufactured on a 90nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) process. VIA said the target of C7-M processor is on the notebook market including the slim and light notebooks or Tablet PCs, however, the CPU will be more competitive in the mainstream embedded systems market. Local sources noted that the pricing for the C7-M may help VIA compete with Intel in the embedded market.

VIA also announced that Hewlett-Packard (HP) Co. has adopted its Eden ESP processor in some of its thin-client computers, which will go to market sometime this week. With the order, VIA's microprocessors for the first time go into HP's computers. VIA Technologies stresses that with its fanless operation, the VIA Eden processor targets a myriad of embedded computing and personal electronics devices that require ultra low power consumption, rock solid reliability and compatibility with standard x86 operating systems and software applications. Before the HP order, VIA’s microprocessors had gone into non-PC computing devices supplied by IBM, Sony, Motorola, NEC and Fujitsu Siemens Computer.

Meanwhile, Transmeta recently announcing its plan to sell its Crusoe line of microprocessors to Hong Kong-based Culturecom Technology, Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) and ULi Electronics, two other Taiwan-based chipset makers, will probably need to work with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to develop solutions for the embedded market, as they do not produce processors on their own.
