South Korean memory chip maker Hynix has lost 60 percent of its business in India to counterfeit chips according to the Channel Times website, which quoted Hynix Semiconductor Asia executives as sources.
The company is planning to initiate legal proceedings against dealers engaged in selling the counterfeit chips, the report referenced K. C. Suh, managing director of Hynix Semiconductor Asia, as saying.
The counterfeits are being sold at 50 to 100 rupees less than the genuine Hynix-made memories, the report said. "In the process, there is no warranty on the counterfeits and the PCs may be damaged in the long run. This is damaging the brand name of Hynix in the market," the report quoted Suh as saying.
"The fonts on the counterfeit are deeper than on the Hynix chips. In addition, the back sides of the counterfeits bear circular markings by molding machines, while the location mark or equipment mark on the counterfeit chips," the report quoted Kim Tae Hee, senior manager of technical services and marketing, memory division, Hynix Semiconductor Asia, as saying.
