TSMC and UMC posted steadily improving sales in June as they climb out of a global semiconductor slump.
Chip sales are picking up as customers digest the last of excess inventory following unexpectedly weak demand in late 2004. That glut led to a downturn in the first quarter of this year.
Top contract chip maker TSMC reported June revenues rose for a fourth straight month, up 3.1 percent from May to T$20.105 billion (US$626 million), although down 10.7 percent from a year earlier.
"Due to continued demand recovery from our customers, wafer shipments for June increased over May," company spokeswoman Lora Ho said, referring to the silicon wafers used to make chips.
On the other hand, UMC posted June sales of T$6.607 billion, up 2.1 percent from May but down 36 percent from the same month last year.
