Taiwan's government ordered financial markets shut today and canceled flights as Typhoon Haitang descends on the island's capital, bringing torrential rains and winds gusting at up to 276 killometers (172.5 miles) an hour.
Haitang, the fifth tropical storm in the Pacific typhoon season, was centered about 40 kilometers east of the eastern coastal city of Hualien at 6 a.m. local time, according to the Central Weather Bureau. It is forecast to move west-northwest at about 17 kilometers an hour, the bureau said.
All businesses, government offices and schools in Taiwan's 23 cities and counties are closed today. The Taipei city government recommended people stay home. Domestic flights were all cancelled.
Taiwan's government issued mudslide and flood warnings for northern and central Taiwan, including Taipei, and said Haitang will probably soon make landfall near Hualien, on the island's eastern coast.
