Declining memory prices caused Japanese DRAM maker Elpida Memory Inc. to report a net loss of 3.30 billion yen (about $29.4 million) on revenues of 48.04 trillion yen (about $427.3 million) in its first fiscal quarter of 2005.
However, the net sales did increase by 5.5 percent year-on-year with lower sales of DRAMs into personal computers offset by growth in sales for digital consumer electronics and mobile phones.
The company also reported that June marked a turnaround in the balance of DRAM supply and demand and that DRAM prices have started to stabilize. This coincided with an end to inventory adjustments in the market for digital consumer electronics and mobile phones, where there are indications of growing demand for DRAMs.
Elpida forecast increased sales of 52 billion yen to 55 billion yen (about $460 million to $512 million) in the second fiscal quarter and with a performance between breakeven and a net loss of 4 billion yen (about $36 million).
