Infineon loss widen as memory prices fell

Tuesday, July 26, 2005 Infineon doubled its operating loss for the quarter as prices for memory chips fell more than expected.

The company said it expected an improvement in the current quarter as prices stabilized for standard DRAM memory chips, which bring in 40 percent of its sales. But it did not reiterate its full-year forecast to break even at operating level.

Infineon's EBIT (earnings before interest and tax) loss of 234 million ($282 million) was twice that of the previous quarter, and compared with a 165 million loss forecast on average in a Reuters poll of 15 analysts.

Quarterly sales came in on a par with the March quarter and slightly ahead of forecasts at 1.61 billion, helped by stronger demand for DRAM chips used in personal computers, and a weakening of the euro versus the U.S. dollar.

J.P. Morgan said Infineon's 30-percent drop in average selling price was worse than the 25 percent it had expected. Industry leader Samsung Electronics' prices fell 20 percent in the quarter and Elpida's fell 15 percent.
