Robert Bosch GmbH has formed a subsidiary company, Bosch Sensortec GmbH, to encompass its MEMS (microelectromechanical system) sensor activities.
Bosch (Stuttgart, Germany) has been a pioneer of MEMS over the last 20 years and even has a dry reactive ion etching process (DRIE) named after it as the Bosch process.
Bosch Sensortec (Kusterdingen, Germany) will start with a staff of 20 and supply sensors into the consumer electronics and life sciences applications.
Over the last 20 years Bosch has supplied 400 million sensors and in 2004 alone produced 94 million MEMS-based sensors mainly for automotive applications such as airbag systems and anti-lock braking systems.
In 2004 Bosch had sales of 40 billion euro (about $48.5 billion).
