MoSys embedded memory technology improved performance

Thursday, August 4, 2005

Monolithic System Technology Inc., better known as MoSys, saw sales increase while loss decreased in its June quarter.

The embedded memory player’s revenue of $3.1 million compared to $2.7 million in the year-ago quarter, a 14 percent increase. Quarter-over-quarter, the Q2 sales slipped from Q1’s $3.4 million, however.

Licensing revenue of $1.9 million climbed both sequentially and year-over-year, up 60 percent and 48 percent, respectively. MoSys attributed the gains to he consummation of several licensing contracts that were in negotiation during the past several quarters.

Meanwhile, royalty revenue of $1.1 million decreased 24 percent sequentially, due to seasonality in the consumer electronic business, and 21 percent year-over-year.

Q2’s gross margin was 80 percent, decreasing slightly from 83 percent in Q1, but increasing from the 74 percent gross margin reported in Q2 2004. Net loss for the quarter was $579,000, or 2 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $1.4 million, or 4 cents per share, in the previous quarter and a net loss of $4.1 million, or 13 cents per share, in the same period last year.

"In the second quarter, we continued to build upon the momentum from the first quarter of 2005," commented Mark Voll, CFO of MoSys, in a statement. "We sequentially decreased our per share loss by half and continued to see licensing revenue grow, both sequentially and year-over-year. We believe this progress is a direct result of the sales and marketing initiatives implemented over the last several quarters. Concurrently, we have been successful in managing our operating expenses, having a positive effect on our operating margin."
