Philips put Taiwan sales under mainland China operation

Friday, August 5, 2005
Philips Semiconductor has recently put its sales operation in Taiwan under its operation in mainland China after a restructuring it launched last month in its Asia-Pacific operation, which separating it into two divisions: the Greater China region, with its headquarters in Shanghai; and the rest of Asia.

Philips Semiconductor's Greater China operation was originally put under its Asia-Pacific operation, which was headquartered in Taipei, however, the change is limited to reporting line between the Taiwan office and the China's operation, according to the Philips Taiwan's executives. Philips' officials noted that the company has engaged in a recent recruitment drive to strengthen OEM and ODM cooperation.

Phillips stated that their Taipei office will remain open and that local operations will not change. However, some industry watchers pointed out that the Philips Semiconductor's restructuring marks another multinational's retreat of operation emphasis to the China from Taiwan following a flurry of multinationals' relocations of their Asia-Pacific headquarters to China from elsewhere in Asia. It was another major move by Philips after the company had moved their Hong Kong office to Taiwan in 1997.

In last few year with the production and market's size in China pull back Philips back to drawing board and reconsider moving back to China, but not in Hong Kong but somewhere in the eastern China such as Shanghai or Beijing.
