Dell Inc will celebrate this month the shipment of 10 million product units from its facility in Xiamen, China, thus achieving a major milestone for its seven years of operation in China, according to Kevin Rollins, president and CEO of Dell.
Speaking in Hong Kong on August 4, Rollins said shipment from the China facility supports the manufacturing requirements for the North Asia market, including mainland China, Hong Kong and Japan.
Rollins said this important milestone embodies Dell's commitment to long-term investment in China. "We are very proud of what we have achieved in China and our role in helping to contribute to China's economic development and increasing information technology leadership," he said. "The ten million-unit milestone signifies the strategic position China has in Dell's global growth as a base for manufacturing, product development, customer sales and service, and technical support."
Since coming to China in 1998, Dell has expanded its scale of investments. Today, Dell China's number of employees total 5,500. Besides the China Customer Center manufacturing facility and China Enterprise Command Center in Xiamen, Dell has also established Dell International Services in Dalian, as well as a China Design Center and Worldwide Procurement Office in Shanghai.
In 2004, Dell purchased about US$12 billion in parts and components from China to support its global procurement activities. Currently Dell is also building its second factory in China to double its manufacturing capacity. China has become the fourth largest market for Dell.
