Micron unveils 800Mhz DDR2 MiniDIMMs

Monday, August 15, 2005

Micron Technology announced availability of what it claims to be the first PC2-5300 and PC2-6400 double data rate 2 (DDR2) very low profile (VLP) registered and unbuffered mini dual-inline memory modules (MiniDIMMs) for the growing networking and communications equipment markets.

Available in 256MB, 512MB and 1GB densities, the 0.72-inch (18.29mm) VLP MiniDIMMs enable designers to integrate more modules in the same or less board space, thereby improving performance in networking servers, routers, switches, gateways, hubs and bridges.

The low profile of Micron’s VLP DDR2 MiniDIMMs enables vertical socketing on the board, in contrast to traditional angled memory sockets, effectively reducing the total memory space footprint. This form factor can improve air flow, which decreases device operating temperatures and improves system reliability, the company claims. VLP MiniDIMMs are backward compatible with existing MiniDIMM sockets, enabling engineers to receive immediate benefits without any product redesign, Micron said.
