AMD Corp. is not ruling out additional cooperation with Infineon Technologies to produce flash memory.
In an interview with the German newspaper Süddeutschen Zeitung, AMD CEO Hector Ruiz called a cooperation between the companies "absolutely reasonable."
"Cooperation [with Infineon] in this area is highly possible," Ruiz said. The companies operate a joint mask center in Dresden, Germany. This would also make an partnership an "attractive thing," Ruiz said. However, Ruiz declined to discuss whether AMD is talking with Infineon about future cooperation.
AMD has so far had little success in the flash market. Infineon has the same problem, due of its late flash-market entry. Hence, AMD plans to disclose its flash activities consisting of a joint venture with Fujitsu Semiconductors.
Ruiz said in the interview that AMD's flash plan should be in place by the fourth quarter.
He also predicted consolidation of the flash memory market. "At present, there are too many suppliers, and nearly none of them makes money. There will be a consolidation" soon, Ruiz said.
Meanwhile, construction of another semiconductor fab for processors in Dresden is progressing, Ruiz said.
William Siegle, AMD's chief scientist, recently told EE Times.de that employee qualifications at the Dresden plant were high. As a result, AMD is considering building another chip fab in Dresden. A final decision has not yet been made, Ruiz Süddeutschen Zeitung, but called another Dresden facility a "serious option."
