UMC extended PCI Express license from Rambus

Wednesday, August 24, 2005

Rambus Inc. and United Microelectronic Corp. (UMC) today announced that they have extended the availability of Rambus’ PCI Express PHY cells to UMC’s 180nm, 150nm and 90nm processes, building on an existing 130nm licensing deal.

Laura Stark, VP of Rambus’ platform solutions group believes this offering should prove to be a boon for chip and system developers, enabling them to bring new capabilities to market with lower risk. “By partnering with UMC, Rambus continues to enable mass adoption for advanced interface technology that results in faster, lower cost and more capable systems,” she said in a statement.

The expanded licensing agreement drives Rambus’ IP solutions to a broader range of technologies, notably UMC’s mainstream 90nm process.

Under the agreement, UMC foundry customers gain access to Rambus’ portfolio of PCI Express-based interfaces, which optimize link utilization, latency, power consumption and silicon footprint, according to Rambus.

Financial details of the deal were not given.
