U.S. government networks are being targeted by hackers via Chinese Web sites, according to a report Thursday (Aug. 25) in the Washington Post.
The report quoted unnamed U.S. officials as saying computer networks operated by the Defense Department and other U.S. agencies have been attacked by hackers using Web sites in China.
The report said it was unclear whether the attacks are being coordinated by Chinese officials or whether hackers are merely using Chinese networks to disguise the origin of their attacks.
Hundreds of unclassified government networks have been breached, according to the report, but classified networks have so far not been compromised.
One unnamed U.S. source said the scope of the attacks was "surprisingly big." However, other computer experts said probes of unclassified U.S. networks are widespread and not limited to China.
